Poche Beach is a lesser known spot so you can avoid the crowds, especially if you’re partial to longboarding. A beach break, the peaks shift but you’ll find both lefts and rights. Because the ocean floor is a mix of rock and sand, it’s a spot worth checking out for beginners who want time and space to practice the basics. Best of all, chances are good you’ll have the waves to yourself.
Access to Poche Beach
The access point is located about a mile north of North Beach in San Clemente going towards Dana Point on the Pacific Coast Highway. Google Maps will get you to the right area. Street parking is usually available on Camino Capistrano near the intersection with Pacific Coast Highway. Walk across the PCH and follow signs for public access.
There aren’t public restrooms or showers, so be prepared to rough it.

Access to Capistrano Beach
Another option nearby with similar conditions is Capistrano Beach. Drive another two miles north up the Pacific Coast Highway to the intersection with Beach Road. Turn left at the light and park in the lot next to the beach. It’s inconsistent, but you might get lucky along that stretch leading up to Dana Point — and again, avoid the crowds, which is always ideal.
