Mariposa beach access in San Clemente

Top 10 Things To Do in San Clemente

If you’re planning a visit to San Clemente, the “Spanish Village by the Sea,” these are the key places and facts that will help determine when and where to make your trip, whether you’re coming here to surf, attend an event, or stay with friends.

  1. Surf year-round in San Clemente. Some spots favor summer swell from the south (like Uppers or Doheny), but waves peel pretty much every day of the year here. Winter (“off season”) is an excellent time to visit because the weather is moderate (60s during the day) and the surf spots are less crowded. Check out our Surf Guides for information on the local breaks.
  2. San Clemente boasts two legendary surf spots: Trestles and San Onofre, Trestles for world class waves, San O for its unique culture.
  3. The San Clemente Pier is a central destination. You may also access the beach from the pier or grab a bite at Fisherman’s, a seafood restaurant on the water.
  4. Walk the San Clemente Beach Trail, a 2.3 dirt path that spans from North Beach to Calafia Beach. It’s well-maintained and accessible from multiple entry points along the way.
  5. Avenida Del Mar is the main strip for shopping. Parking usually is easy (and free) either on the street or in public parking lots with easy access to the local boutiques and restaurants. Stroll around the corner onto El Camino Real for a full day of browsing.
  6. Numerous notable business in the surf industry were founded and still operate in San Clemente including: Album, Catalyst, Lost, Rainbow Sandals, Stance, Stewart, The Surfer’s Journal, and many more.
  7. Catalina Island is visible from San Clemente on a clear day. If you have time, consider boating to the island for a hike or camping trip. If lucky, you may even see a bison, part of a herd that’s been on the island since the early 1920s.
  8. Take a boat from Dana Point or Newport Beach for nearby whale watching. Dolphins, seals, sea lions, whales and other wildlife can be spotted year-round but months December to March give the best chances for spotting grey whales as they migrate from Alaska to Baja and back.
  9. Visit the Surfing Heritage and Culture Center, a local museum in San Clemente. They feature special exhibits throughout the year as well as speakers and other events. Admission is free.
  10. Enjoy local art galleries featuring surf art. John Severson was a surfer and artist who founded SURFER magazine and had a huge influence on surf culture. Stop by their shop in San Clemente. Drew Brophy is another local artist known for his colorful surf and ocean paintings. You may also see Brian Bent out in the water or his work on display locally. The Laguna Art Museum is another worthwhile stop if you’re up that way.
