Surfboard shaper Terry Senate will be remembered this Saturday, January 25 during a celebration of life ceremony at Doheny Beach. The event is scheduled from 11amPT to 4pmPT, with a paddle-out to begin at 1pmPT.
Senate was a beloved member of the San Clemente surfing community for more than 45 years. He’s known for his engaging personality, experience shaping thousands of boards, and constant attempts at humor. After being in business for 25 years, Senate closed his surf shop in the Los Molinos business district of San Clemente in August 2024. He passed on November 21, 2024, due to natural causes, Surfer Magazine reported.

In a post on Instagram about Senate’s death, Milisa Swisshelm Senate wrote the following message.
As I navigate the depths of my sorrow, I am reminded of the profound impact Terry Senate, my son’s father, had on our lives. Despite our divorce, we maintained an unbreakable bond, united by our devotion to our son, Trey Senate. Terry’s passing has left an unfillable void, but we find comfort in the knowledge that his love for Trey was unwavering and true. As we face this difficult time, we are heartened by the outpouring of love and support from our friends and family. Terry’s legacy will continue to inspire us, and we will keep celebrating his life, even in death. … For now, we take comfort in the memories we shared with Terry and the love that will continue to unite us.
Senate’s former colleague Michael Mauri has also posted information on Instagram, @fundamentalsurf. As of January 1, they were looking for volunteers. For additional information, see www.fundamentalsurf.com.
